Motorcycle Fatalities Drop Dramatically in 2009
The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) reported that motorcycle fatalities declined in 2009 by at least 10 percent. The economic downturn, and fewer riders, is being cited as the primary reason for the reduction in fatal crashes.
Other reasons reported by GHSA for the decline of motorcycle fatalities include, fewer beginning riders, increased state attention to motorcycle safety programs, and poor cycling weather in some areas.
Based on 9 months of 2009 data, Indiana ranked eighth out of the 50 states with 104 fatal motorcycle accidents. GHSA recommended reducing speeding and alcohol impairment, providing motorcycle operating training, and increasing helmet use.
A motorcycle crash can lead to severe injuries including spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and even death.
